Energy Policy (America - We have a problem!)
Climate Change - Global Warming
If you don't believe it, you might not be thinkin right. & We could save the world at no additional cost!
|
The oil age began in 1859 with Edwin Drake drilling his first oil well in
Pennsylvania. To date, we the people of planet earth, have extracted
and burned about 1 trillion barrels of crude oil. The industrial
revolution started about 200 years ago. Since then we have been
using larger and larger amounts of coal and natural gas at increasing
rates as well.
Millions of years in - 200 years out
It took millions of years for natural processes to sequester
all that carbon into the oil, coal, and natural gas that we
have used since the dawn of the industrial revolution.
It has taken mankind just 200 years to burn it and release
the carbon back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, CO2.
That would be, "millions of years in - 200 years out."
Lets repeat that, "millions of years in - 200 years out."
And one more time, "millions of years in - 200 years out."
You might not be thinkin right
Scientist have determined that the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere
are more than 30% higher than they were before the beginning of the
industrial revolution. This is due mostly to the combustion of fossil fuels
and deforestation. CO2 is a known green house gas. The more CO2
you have, the more green house effect you have, which translates into
warmer average temperatures as in climate change - global warming. If
you are one of the people who have not bought into the idea of global
warming, then what do you think all that extra carbon is doing to the
atmosphere? Perhaps the problem is that you might not be
thinking right.
Money is a wonderful thing to waste
So what happens if we spend a lot of money on energy effecientcies
and renewable energy sources, and global warming turns out to be a
passing thing. The climate doesn't change. The world as we know it
doesn't come to an end. What would we have accomplished with all the
money that was spent? Lets make a list and see:
- Energy independence from foreign governments that don't
necessarily like us.
- Reduced funding to Islamic terrorist groups who receive some of
their money from petro dictatorship states.
- A cleaner environment, free of fossil fuel pollution.
- New industries that will create millions of American jobs.
- Lower energy bills for you due to increased energy efficientcies.
Save the world at no additional cost
So what do you think? Doesn't this sound like a wonderful way to waste
some money? And just think, what if the climate scientist are right
about global warming? We could save the world at no additional
cost.
Or we could do nothing and loose it all
On the other hand, we could do nothing. That will get us more
dependence on imported energy from unfriendly governments,
continued funding for Islamic terrorism, more pollution, fewer American
jobs, and higher energy bills for you.
And, if the climate guys are right, we will be up to our elbows in all sorts
of problems. The predictions include:
- Sea levels would rise, displacing millions of people.
- Changing weather patterns; too much rain in some regions, and
not enough rain in others. This would play havoc on agriculture
and displace millions more people.
- Water wars as the worlds glaciers melt and rivers run dry.
- Mass extinctions due to habitat destruction.
- Increased pollution which would be detrimental to your health.
So what it boils down to is we can take the necessary actions to
reverse global warming and solve a host of other problems along the
way. Or we can do nothing, and suffer in our misery. If the scientist are
right about climate change, then doing nothing will result in the end of
life as we know it. But if we decide to take action, we will be changing
the world in many, many positive ways. We are fast approaching the
tipping point.
