Carbon Footprint

How big are your feet?
Find out now!
Carbon Footprint: a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide
produced by a person, organization, or location at a given time.
Carbon Schnarbon, everybody has a footprint.
You have a carbon footprint. We have a carbon footprint. The guy next
door has a carbon footprint. People in China have carbon footprints.
Your dog has a carbon footprint. Everybody has a carbon footprint.
How big are your feet?

There is a lot of talk about carbon footprints these days. So what is the
big deal? Atmospheric CO2 levels have increased by over 35% since
the beginning of the industrial revolution. This is attributed largely to
the very high levels of fossil fuels that we have burned in the last 200
years.
Oink, oink - we are carbon pigs
So how does this effect you? About 25% of the increase in CO2 levels
have been attributed to the USA. According to the
Low Carbon Diet, a
typical American household generates 55,000 lbs of CO2 per year. By
contrast, a typical German household generates 27,000 lbs, and a
typical Swedish household generates only 15,000 lbs. We are carbon
pigs!
The pitter - patter of little feet
We all need to try to reduce our carbon footprints. To do that, you first
need to use a
carbon footprint calculator to calculate your current
footprint and see where you are. Then you can play around with the
numbers to see which things you can do that will have the biggest
impact. This will help you find what is sometimes referred to as the low
hanging fruit. In other words, the actions you can take that are
inexpensive but generate large reductions of CO2. Do these things
1st. After that, you can look into other ways to reduce CO2 such as
upgrading your appliances to
Energy Star, installing a new HVAC
system, more insulation, and energy efficient windows.
The key is to get started
Use a carbon calculator (see left sidebar for links to carbon
calculators) to find out how much CO2 you are generating now. Then
you should do the easy things, the low hanging fruit. After that you
work on the bigger projects as you can afford them. You are probably
not going to throw out a good refrigerator just to buy an
Energy Star
model. But when it is time to replace it, compare the efficiency ratings.
The same goes for your car, and everything else you own.

To help you get started, we recommend reading the following:
